    1. @Nuppusaurus I wonder if some of the constants that washed over board during the long voyages of the south Pacific islanders made it to Finland

  1. Interestingly, the ants in Finland have a challenge to see how long they can sit in a sauna with their bare buts.

  2. Finland is crazy. The Finnish MilSurp company Varustreleka hold a competition every year at the start of summer. Who ever can guess most accurately how many Finns will die due to swimming in lakes whilst drunk wins a gift card.

    1. Every single year during the _juhannus_ (Midsummer) celebrations during which, since this is what Finnish cultural tradition at its purest is supposed to be, we’re obviously drinking copious amounts of alcohol so lots of intoxicated people suddenly decide they want to go for a nice little dip on the water at one of our infinite lakes we are quite (in)famous for and apparently for a very valid reason now that I’m thinking about it more and more.

    2. @Ginger Cat oh no, this is true. We have the same kind of bet in our work crew.
It may be a bit dark, but that is what we are over here

    1. @survivor 64119  that is a lie, they have almost 10% of middle easterns, since finish women only reproduce until their middle late 30’s and only have 3 kids tops, and immigrants start reproducing at 16 or 17 (two generations by the time the finish women start their first), and have as many kids as possible (8 or more) is not gonna take more than three generations to be outnumbered and who knows what else (Lebanese might be able to give you an idea of what the what else is).

  3. my mother’s second language was English. we learned the correct pronunciation of the Finnish language.

    1. Number 12. A Finnish farmer named Simo Heyha single-handedly stacked many, many Russian bodies during the winter war of 1939.

    2. @Paul Rupright interesting, many unsung heroes in WW2. Unfortunately the Holocaust card is the one that keeps getting played more than any other tragedy. As an example, 40 million Indians died under the Biritish rule from 1900 to 1947. No international community segment talks about this. Its all about the 6 million Jews who died in the concentration camps in WW2. On another note, 25 million Russians died in WW2 alone but they don’t get the recognition they deserve from the West.

  4. I think it’s important to mention that ant hills in Finland are ENORMOUS, some reaching over 2m/6.6 feet! Constructed by the red wood ant, I believe

    1. We have one of those near our cabin, it was over 1m tall when my grandad was just a child 100 years ago. Ant hills grow really big over the years if you just leave them alone

    1. The only Finnish I know is “olenko ruma” it means I am cool! My Finnish coworker taught me years ago!

  5. Just to clarify, there is no extension for a sauna in the Parliament building, BUT there are multiple very nice saunas here in the parliament.

  6. Well I mean if you have a education system like Finland and get a sword for graduating then no wonder you are gonna be the happiest people on Earth

  7. I really have a soft spot for Finland. They are different from everyone else. Love love love the language. If you don’t know him yet, check out Antti Tuomainen, my current favourite writer.

  8. Have been caught speeding at 140kph in Finland outside a place called Ekenas, the police actually show decent qualities and are very professional, unlike other counties which follow you so the can make you speed up more. Was breath tested which they take dead serious there, pass that but fined 14 days of my income so it was GBP£1200 then which is roughly €1350. Internationals don’t escape the fines.

  9. 🎵 Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
    Pony trekking or camping
    Or just watching TV

    Finland, Finland, Finland
    It’s the country for me
    You’re so near to Russia
    So far from Japan
Quite a long way from Cairo
    Lots of miles from Vietnam

    Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
    Eating breakfast or dinner
Or snack lunch in the hall
    Finland, Finland, Finland
    Finland has it all

    You’re so sadly neglected
    And often ignored
    A poor second to Belgium
    When going abroad

    Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I quite want to be
    Your mountains so lofty
    Your treetops so tall
    Finland, Finland, Finland
    Finland has it all

    Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I quite want to be
    Your mountains so lofty
    Your treetops so tall
    Finland, Finland, Finland
    Finland has it all
    Finland has it all 🎵

  10. Of course, they’re the happiest country in the world. They have a government that cares about the population, not just the wealthy people. Weird, hey?

  11. Fact 13: You cannot move freely in Finland. Failing to submit a mandatory move notification to the authority is sanctioned with fines.

  12. Been to Finland from America back in 2003. Absolutely loved the people and the summer. Would love to live there.

  13. Love the idea of the speeding ticket fine rule. It means people who have a low income won’t be going hungry just because they made a mistake, and idiots in their expensive ferraries showing off get an actual penalty that they can feel
